Tombstone Tuesday – Elijah M. Ellis

February 17, 2009 in Evidence

Elijah Marion Ellis was my three-times great-grandfather.  He and his wife, Elizabeth McKinney Tucker, had four children.  His life was marked by tragedy; he lost his sight to typhoid fever at the age of 32 and was dead ten years later at the age of 42.

He is buried at New Prospect Church Cemetery, near his in-laws, Churchwell and Rosamond Tucker.

His headstone faces the rear of the cemetery, making it somewhat difficult to locate.

It is inscribed:

E. M. Ellis
Born
Nov. 18, 1823
Died
June 26, 1865

The epitaph is Revelation 14:13:

And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.
