This tombstone marks the burial place of my 4x-great-uncle, John William Tucker and his wife, Sarah Jane. John’s sister, Elizabeth (Tucker) Ellis, was my 3x-great-grandmother.
I know very little about John and Sarah. John was born March 30, 1840 in Murray County and died March 24, 1924, also in Murray County. He lived to be 84. Sarah was born August 20, 1846 and died November 3, 1930. They are buried at New Prospect Church Cemetery, near John’s parents.
The headstone imagery includes an urn with flowers in the center and ivy trailing down both sides of the stone. Ivy also wraps around the base of the urn. Urns and ivy both often symobolize immortality, with ivy also being a symbol of friendship, affection, and undying devotion.
The epitaph reads:
Although they sleep, Their memory doth live,
And cheering comfort, To their mourners give.
