Randy Seaver’s SNGF challenge this week (and yes, I realize I’m two days late) is to:
Determine who is one of the most prolific fathers in your genealogy database or in your ancestry. By prolific, I mean the one who fathered the most children.
This one was easy for me. John D. Wilfong Whitener, my 4th-great-grandfather. The man had three wives and 22 children. Yes, 22. He is a significant contributor to the number of Whiteners that I have in my database, all of whom I’ve entered manually. I’m still working on his grandchildren.

If you paid attention to those dates, you probably noticed that some of these children overlapped. He was still having children with his second wife, Polly Miller, until 1826 and yet he had children with his third wife, my 4th-great-grandmother, Margaret Dellinger, in 1822 and 1825. John was brought up on charges of adultery with Margaret Dellinger. Polly Miller’s brother was in court the day that John was brought up on charges.
John divorced his first two wives, but he appears to have stuck it out with Margaret. They were still together in 1850, the last census that he appeared on before his death in 1855.
Oh, and by the way, John was a Baptist minister. I think the irony speaks for itself.
