HELLO I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING THE HEMPHILL GENEALOGY FOR QUITE A WHILE AND I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MANY. I UNDERSTAND THAT OUR ANCESTRYS CROSS SEVERAL RACIAL LINES AND IT WOULD BE QUITE HELPFUL IF EVERYONE LISTED THE ETHNICITY OF THEIR ANCESTRY WHERE POSSIBLE. MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER WAS MARGARET (MAGGIE) JANE SIBLEY, HEMPHILL, BELK. I DO NOT KNOW WHERE SHE WAS BORN OR WHO HER PARENTS WERE BUT, HER SONS WERE LEVI THOMAS HEMPHILL AND JOSH HEMPHILL. ONE CENSUS SHOWS LEVI’S BIRTH AS 1886 BUT HIS DEATH CERTIFICATE OF 1967 STATES HE WAS 67? MY GRANDFATHER JOSH HEMPHILL 1892-1986, HIS BIRTH DATE IS ALSO QUESTIONABLE. I CANNOT FIND ANY OF THEM DURING THE 1900 CENSUS. THIS FAMILY WAS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN DECENT.

Hi Deana, thanks for commenting.

My Hemphill ancestors were white; however some were slaveholders in North Carolina and I would not be at all surprised to find African Americans among their descendants.

You don’t say where your Hemphills lived. That is a crucial piece of information in sorting out various lines of the same surname.

Good luck in your research!
