Robert Manning Hemphill, my grandfather’s younger brother, was born November 24, 1918 in Murray County, Georgia. He fought in World War II, serving a year and a half in Africa, and rising to the rank of First Lieutenant. After the war, he returned home to Murray County, opened a dry cleaning business and was elected to city council. He and his wife, Mae Greer, had one son. Robert was killed tragically in a car accident three months shy of his thirtieth birthday. Robert is buried at Chatsworth Heights Cemetery.
