[1, 3, 5] - William Adolphus Whitener enlisted on 07 Jul 1898. He served as a private in Company D, 6th Regiment, U. S. Volunteer Infantry. He was discharged on 15 Mar 1899.
"At the age of 16, Dock (as William was known) lied about his age and enlisted in the US Army during the Spanish-American War. He served in the 6th Regiment, Company D, US Volunteers and fought in all of the major battles in Cuba."

[1] - He "reenlisted in the Army and served in the Phillipine Insurrection. He was assigned to the 37th Regiment, Company H, US Volunteers. He was in General Young's Northern Expedition from October 10, 1899 to December 27, 1899. Engagements were at Arayas, October 12, San Isidro, October 19, and Toboaten River October 27.

[1] - "While fighting in the Phillipines, Dock contracted Malaria Fever and was transported back to the US in October, 1900. He was discharged from the army in December 1900 at Presidio, California. He was said to be of excellent character and his service was honest and faithful."

The household included his wife Prentis A (35), children: Lois E (12), W D (9), Ruth (6), Teddy L (1 4/12), and father, W E (74).
