Birth 9 Jul 1796 Old Fort, Burke, North Carolina
[1, 2] Gender Male Census 1800 , Burke, North Carolina
[4] - There are two Thomas Hemphills in Burke County in 1800; neither census record matches perfectly, but this one seems most probable. Thomas (54) is the only male in the household over the age 45. There is one female over 45 (Mary Ann, 42), one male under 10 (Thomas M, 4), four females under 10 (Ruth Bertha, 6; Rebecca,8; maybe Rachel, 10; and unidentified), three females 10 to 15 (maybe Elizabeth, 12; Jane, 15; and Mary, 22). There are also two undidentified males, one aged 10 to 15 (possibly James, 20) and one aged 16 to 25 (possibly Samuel, 25). There are 12 slaves.
Census 1810 Morganton, Burke, North Carolina
[5] - Thomas Hemphill was enumerated as head of household and the only male aged 45+. Other household members include a male aged 10 to 15 (likely Thomas McEntire Hemphill, 14), a female aged 10 to 15 (likely Ruth Bertha, 14), four females aged 16 to 25 (likely Rebecca 18, Rachel 20, Elizabeth 22, and Jane 25), and one female aged 26 to 44 (likely daughter, Mary (Polly). There are 14 slaves.
Census 1820 , Burke, North Carolina
[6] - Thomas M. Hemphill is enumerated as head of household and the only male aged 16 to 25. The other household member is a female aged 16 to 25, which is likely Malinda Burgin. (I feel confident that this record is them, as they were married in 1819 and their first child was not born until November 1820). One person in the household is engaged in agriculture. They had no slaves.
Will 12 Jan 1824 , Burke, North Carolina
[7, 8] - Thomas Hemphill bequeathed to "my Son Thomas the whole of that land which I bought from John Davidson, and on which I now live, also one hundred acres lying on Brevard Creek to him and his heirs for ever." He further bequeathed to "my Son Thomas, three negro men Peter, Bob & Lewis, also one negro woman named Jude, and her child named Shala, also one Cuberd, one Desk, one Clock, two beds and their furniture, one old nager[?], and one Still and Still vysels." He further bequeathed to his son, Thomas, 1/3 of his stock (cattle, hogs, & sheep). - > Captain Thomas Hemphill's will
"Thomas, Jr." was mentioned in his father's will. He was bequeathed the land on which he lived, which was bought from John Davidson. -> Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western NC
Census 1830 , Burke, North Carolina
[9] - Thomas Hemphill was enumerated as head of household (male aged 20-29). Other household members include a male under five (likely Benjamin B, 4), two males 5-9 (likely, Thomas M, 6 and John M, 8), a female under 5 (possibly Elizabeth, 4), a female 5 to 9 (likely Mary Ann, 10), and an unknown female, aged 50 to 59.
Census 1840 West Of North Fork, Burke, North Carolina
[10] - "Thos Hemphill" was enumerated as head of household and is the male aged 40 to 50. Also in the household are a male under 5 (likely James Y., 5), a male aged 10 to 15 (likely Benjamin B., 14), two males aged 15 to 20 (likely Thomas B, 16 and John M, 18), a female under 5 (likely Martha M, 3), a female aged 5 to 10 (likely Sarah M, 7), and a female aged 40 to 50 (likely Margaret Hemphill, 41). There are also 4 male slaves under 10, a male slave 36 to 54, a male slave 55 to 100, a female slave 24 to 35, and a female slave 55 to 100. Nine persons are employed in agriculture.
Elizabeth Alexander Hemphill would have been 14, but she is not enumerated in this household. Is she living with relatives or is she not the daughter of Thomas McEntire Hemphill?
