    • "On 21 Mar 1835, Joseph and Sarah Garrett sold 2 tracts of land on Muddy Creek to James Stroud (brother) and Gardner Stearns. The land was described as 274 acres and 500 acres formerly belonging to Peter Stroud, deceased, but falling to Garrett in right of his wife being one of the legal heirs. Witnesses were Zachariah Hawkins and Thomas Green. Both Joseph and Sarah signed with a mark. We are fortunate that this deed was filed late (after 1842) or else it would have been lost with all the other Burke County deeds destroyed in the Civil War. Due to the lateness, it was filed in the new county of McDowell. (McDowell Co, NC Deed Book 3 page 40)."
