[1] - "A court record in 1768 also reveals that 'William Allin, Molatto Boy, ran away from his master is therefore to serve him James Hemphill four and a half months longer than his indenture called for.'"

[1] - "it is evident that he raised cattle, as the Inferior Court Minutes of Rowan County, North Carolina, for August 9, 1771 reveal that James Hemphill registered his mark as 'a Crop in the Left Eare and a Swallowfork in the Right Eare' and his brand as "H on the Left Sholder and Butock.'"

[1] - "On July 22, 1773, James and Susannah Hemphill sold the 302 acres in Tryon County (originally Anson County) which James had obtained by royal grant March 28, 1755. The land was sold for 52 pounds 10 shillings proclamation money to Thomas Costner of Tryon County. It was proved in 1774, April Court of Tryon County, recorded and ordered to be registered. (Deeds 1774, page 38, Tryon County, N.C. in North Carolina Archives, Raleigh.) Witnesses to the deed of sale were Samuel Young, James' friend and neighbor in Fourth Creek Settlement, and a Peter Sides. As previously mentioned, it is not known whether James and his family ever entered upon this land."
