Francis was the mother of two children, but only one was still living. She and both parents were born in Virginia. They lived on a farm, but it is unclear if the farm was owned or rented. Morgan Bates (32) was a boarder.

Ben Hemphill and Fanny Saunders were married the same day, by the same minister, so presumably they were also married in the above ceremony.
