They marched to Burke Courthouse and then to Cane Creek where a small skirmish occurred on September 12, 1780. Afterwards, they went to the Watauga Settlements with the remnants of McDowell's troops. They were joined by the men of Colonel Shelby and Colonel Sevier and marched back to Burke County. Wilfong fought in the Battle of Kings Mountain and received a wound in the left arm caused by a musket ball.

He next volunteered as a ten-months continental soldier in mid July, 1781. He served in Captain Cowan's Company of Colonel Samuel Hammond's S. C. Regiment. They marched from Lincoln Co., N. C. to near Augusta, Ga. and from there to the mid S. C. region joining the Army of General Nathaniel Greene. He took part in the Battle of Eutaw Springs (Sept. 8, 1781).
