Yesterday’s post focused on a Georgia death certificate from 1928 and at the end I promised to tell you how to find those records. I had a whole post written that started out:

If you have Georgia relatives, you probably know that the Georgia Archives has a wonderful online site called Georgia’s Virtual Vault that includes many, many images treasured by genealogists. One of the more recent collections added is “Georgia Non-Indexed Death Certificates, 1928-1930.” It’s a great collection of images; however, as you can see in the title, the collection is non-indexed, which makes finding the correct image a bit of a challenge. The good news is that FamilySearch has recently indexed this collection (I helped!) and the index is now available at FamilySearch Labs. Here is a process that I recently used to find a 1928 death certificate image.

Well, guess what? This collection has moved from FamilySearch Labs to FamilySearch Beta. What’s more, FamilySearch Beta also has the images online! It is now much, much easier to find these records.

To get started, go to https://beta.familysearch.org/. Click on USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Scroll down until you see Georgia Deaths, 1928-1930.

Now, it’s simply a matter of entering search parameters. You can search by any combination of name, location, date, etc. I entered Francis Kendrick as the name and Murray, Georgia, USA as the death location.

The very first result was a Francis Kendrick whose spouse was Barbara Baxter. These are my great-great-grandparents!

When I clicked on the link, I saw an indexed entry was actually for their daughter, Cordeale. I learned a lot of information from this index. However, we always want to use an index to find the actual record. Now, all you have to do is click on the image thumbnail (you must have a free FamilySearch account and be logged in) to see the image.

That’s it! Easy as pie. If you are researching people who may have died (or who had children who may have died) in Georgia in the 1920′s, you definitely want to check out this collection.

Sometimes you find a record that has so much information it is worth it’s weight in gold. Before I found this death certificate, all I knew about Cordeale (possibly spelled Cordelia) was her name, approximate birth year, parents’ names, and location on the 1880 census.

Information gleaned from the death certificate:

Alternate spelling for first name: Cordeale

Middle name: Josephine

Husband’s name: John Caylor

Date of birth: 12 October 1871 (derived from age at death)

Date of death: 20 Aug 1828

Place of death: Cisco, Georgia

Cause of death: Pulmonary Tuberculosis

Burial place: Calvary Cemetery

My great-grandfather’s residence in 1928 (he was the informant – Cordeale is his sister).

It also confirms her parents as Francis Kendrick and Barbara Baxter.

Research Next Steps

Look for Cordeale’s marriage record (also in Georgia’s Virtual Vault).

Look for other relatives who may have died in Georgia between 1928 and 1930.

Look for Cordeale on 1920 census.

Check back tomorrow to learn how I located this and other Georgia death certificates from 1928 to 1930.

Barbara was born February 1854, possibly in Murray County, Georgia. She married Francis Marion Kendrick on April 16, 1871 in Murray County. They lived in the Alaculsa Valley, in the upper northeast corner of Murray County for the rest of their lives. Barbara and F. M. had eleven children. Barbara died March 5, 1939 in Crandall, Georgia and is buried at Calvary Cemetery.

Barbara’s parents were named as Dave Baxter and Polly Lowery on her death certificate. I found a marriage certificate for an Andrew B. Baxter and a Mary Lowery in Murray County and I found notes from another researcher stating that Andy Baxter, who married one of two Lowery sisters – Betsy and Pollie – had a daughter named Barbara who married a Hallie Kendrick. I’ve heard that Francis Marion Kendrick was known as “Hodie.” I’m working on the hypothesis that these are the same people. The same researcher noted that Andy had a daughter named Sarah Caroline, who married Alphonse Chable, and a son named Dave.

I recently found an online tree that named a James David Baxter as the son of Andrew B. Baxter and Mary Lowery. This tree also has a burial place listed for Andrew B. Baxter: Hopewell Cemetery. I haven’t been to Hopewell Cemetery, but that is also where Francis Marion Kendrick’s parents are buried.
