Newt was a farmer6 when their children were young and he also made moonshine. According to my grandmother, he spent some time as a streetcar conductor in Birmingham, Alabama, but I haven’t found any documentation of that yet. After their son, Worth, died, Newt and Rachel moved to Murray County, where he worked in the Cohutta Talc Mine.7

Rachel was a midwife – my grandmother tells stories of her mother being called out in all kinds of weather to deliver babies. After they moved to Murray County, Rachel cooked lunch every day at the mine where Newt worked. According to my grandmother, “everyone” from town came to eat because the food was so good (no doubt this is where my grandmother got her cooking skills from). In later years, Rachel made and sold quilts. I loved to visit her when I was little, because she always let me play with the quilt scraps and piece together little squares. She left me her quilting machine when she died.

Newt and Rachel are buried in Johnson Cemetery in Fannin County, alongside their son and her parents and family.8

I got away from genealogy a couple of weeks this month, spending my time on other pursuits (reading and scrapbooking, namely).

How did I do toward my goals?

Write 10 blog posts – completed 7

Abstract (or update previously-done abstractions, if necessary) 20 census pages and update the citations. I haven’t located all these census pages yet, so some research will be in order. Specifically work on the pages that include: Robert West 1840, 1830, 1820, 1810, 1800; Anna Mariah Cook 1840, 1830, 1820, 1810; Wyatt Lankford 1870, 1840, 1830, 1820, 1810; Morning Tabitha Bruer 1860, 1840, 1830, 1820; Abner Lankford – any (I just learned about him this week). – Oh, not good. I couldn’t find any of the above census records and moreover, I only completed abstracting one that I did find – Frances (Rudd) Kendrick and Thomas Kendrick 1840. I’ll probably get one more finished this afternoon.

Index 30 names on FamilySearch – batting zero here.

Scan 5 photos & process 5 headstone photos. Done and done. Finally, something to check off.

Look for (online) source records to verify facts referenced in pp. 11-15 of Butler Ahnentafel report. – another zero.

Oh well. A new month starts tomorrow, along with an opportunity to start fresh. Check back on Tuesday for February’s to-do list.

I began blogging my genealogy to-dos last month and I’m pleased with the results. Having the list out here for all to see keeps me accountable, plus I don’t feel like I’m tearing off in a hundred directions at once. I can stay focused on what I want to accomplish this month and as I think of other things I want to do, I just jot them down in the draft for the next month’s post.

So, for January:

Write 10 blog posts

Abstract (or update previously-done abstractions, if necessary) 20 census pages and update the citations. I haven’t located all these census pages yet, so some research will be in order. Specifically work on the pages that include: Robert West 1840, 1830, 1820, 1810, 1800; Anna Mariah Cook 1840, 1830, 1820, 1810; Wyatt Lankford 1870, 1840, 1830, 1820, 1810; Morning Tabitha Bruer 1860, 1840, 1830, 1820; Abner Lankford – any (I just learned about him this week).

Index 30 names on FamilySearch

Scan 5 photos & process 5 headstone photos.

Look for (online) source records to verify facts referenced in pp. 11-15 of Butler Ahnentafel report.

That’s the plan. I’ll report back with the results at the end of January.

I have three genealogy wishes and if you could help me with any of them, I would really appreciate it. I promise to be a good genealogist – to make a list of all avenues of research and check it twice, to document my sources, and share my findings.

1. Barbara Baxter, my great-great-grandmother. Oh, Genea-Santa, please help me find something, some small clue, about her parents. I learned their names earlier this year, but the trail stopped cold after that.

2. The Hemphill Family Bible. You know the one I mean; it was referenced in Hemphills of North Carolina and records the vital records of Thomas Hemphill and Mary Ann Mackie’s descendants, all the way down to my grandfather’s siblings. I don’t want to own the bible. I just want to know that it hasn’t been lost or destroyed. If you do locate the bible and could prod the person who has it to donate it to a repository where it could be accessed by others, that would be icing on the cake.

3. Family photos. Any family photos. I’m not picky.

That’s it, Genea-Santa. There will be brownies on the mantle on Christmas Eve. And don’t be afraid of Chocolate when you stop by. She just wants to play with the reindeer.
