Census |
1800 |
Burke County, North Carolina [2] |
- There are two Thomas Hemphills in Burke County in 1800; neither census record matches perfectly, but this one seems most probable. Thomas (54) is the only male in the household over the age 45. There is one female over 45 (Mary Ann, 42), one male under 10 (Thomas M, 4), four females under 10 (Ruth Bertha, 6; Rebecca,8; maybe Rachel, 10; and unidentified), three females 10 to 15 (maybe Elizabeth, 12; Jane, 15; and Mary, 22). There are also two undidentified males, one aged 10 to 15 (possibly James, 20) and one aged 16 to 25 (possibly Samuel, 25). There are 12 slaves.

- Thomas Hemphill was enumerated as head of household and the only male aged 45+. Other household members include a male aged 10 to 15 (likely Thomas McEntire Hemphill, 14), a female aged 10 to 15 (likely Ruth Bertha, 14), four females aged 16 to 25 (likely Rebecca 18, Rachel 20, Elizabeth 22, and Jane 25), and one female aged 26 to 44 (likely daughter, Mary (Polly). There are 14 slaves.
