- "David was listed as 37 years old when he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Athens in 1862. He served in Co. H, 59th Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Cook's Regiment), 1st. (Eakin's) Battalion Infantry. While in the service, he was blinded in his left eye and lost vision in his right eye. He also could not speak above a whisper for about years. He was furloughed and sent home."

- "In 1903, he applied for a Confederate pension. He stated on the application that he had six children but none of them were able to help support him. He also stated that his wife was in bad health and was no longer able to take in laundry to help with their support. His attorney stated that David was in 'very bad condition' and any help would be thankfully received, but if David was not entitled to help, he didn't want it. The pension was denied because his Company was incorrectly stated on the application and officials were unable to verify his military service."
