- "On July 22, 1773, James and Susannah Hemphill sold the 302 acres in Tryon County (originally Anson County) which James had obtained by royal grant March 28, 1755. The land was sold for 52 pounds 10 shillings proclamation money to Thomas Costner of Tryon County. It was proved in 1774, April Court of Tryon County, recorded and ordered to be registered. (Deeds 1774, page 38, Tryon County, N.C. in North Carolina Archives, Raleigh.) Witnesses to the deed of sale were Samuel Young, James' friend and neighbor in Fourth Creek Settlement, and a Peter Sides. As previously mentioned, it is not known whether James and his family ever entered upon this land."
